The challange.

We were excited to hear that Red Bull wanted us to create a Raw 100 segment with FInn Iles, one of the fastest junior athletes on the world cup DH circuit who has since become number one. In the Raw 100 series, films must be 100 seconds (no more no less), can't use slow motion footage and the only sound allowed is the natural sounds captured while filming, no music to help build excitement.

We needed a section of trail that would be fast enough to showcase Finn's ability and the real kicker was that it would have to be ridable in early spring when most of the mountains in BC are still covered in snow. We had the perfect location in mind about an hour outside of Lillooet BC. We were a bit worried when on our first scout we were stopped short of the trailhead due to snowy roads but the hike in revealed that our choice of south facing slope was mostly snow free. With a warm spell on the way we would be good to go in a couple weeks time when we returned with Finn and the crew.

Filming mountain biking comes with many challenges but it's amplified when the only trail access by vehicle is one drop off spot at the top and one pick up location at the bottom and there is no cellular service to keep the crew connected. We hiked our way down the trail with two ground camera systems and two drones for aerials that would prove to be invaluable to show Finn's speed and the beautiful scenery that surrounded us. We would line the trail with microphones and shoot one at a time section of trail while the crew below would be working on buffing out the next section of trail to be shot. The days were long, hiking down hill with heavy packs is never very comfortable after a couple of hours but after two full days of it we had finally finish our 100 second film that we are quite proud of.
